Pre-ban Vs. Post-ban
Hi Fred,
After reading your articles in Shotgun News for 2+ years, I finally ordered some 25 meter AQT targets and your "Guide To Becoming A Rifleman". I've used your techniques on my current rifles and have improved considerably, thanks! Now I want to step up to the plate and buy a M1A. I already have a M1 Garand and agree with your comments on your 1-20-2002 article where a guy stating that the Garand was better than the M14/M1A. That's why I'm inquiring what type of M1A I should look for. For example, should it be a preban or postban? If postban, should it be a Springfield? Should it be upgraded with National Match components? I could go on and on. I would appreciate some guidance and look forward to your reply. Dan H.
Dan: I f you can get a pre-ban, that's always nice, but it won't beat a post-ban, shooting-wise. If you want to get one NOW, without the wait involved in a used one, get a Springfield as they are not only readily available, but put out a decent rifle.
Get the rack-grade and when the barrel wears out (assuming you are smart enough to wear it out), replace it with a GI chrome-lined barrel. Reference the Scout model, the less you alter the basic design, the more reliablility and longevity you will get in the rifle. Reference the match grades, a match barrel will have a tight chamber for accuracy leading to more failures to chamber unless you are REALLY careful with your reloads [which you have to use, to maximize accuracy]. Worse yet, the extra accuracy of a match barrel usually lasts for a couple or three thousand rounds, then drops off to that of a standard barrel. A GI barrel is good for 10,000+ rounds at a MINIMUM.
