What About an M1 Leather Cheekpiece for my M1A?
Surplus leather cheekpads for the Garand are readily available, but it would be a bad idea to try one on your M1A to raise the comb for scope use.
The reason is that the cheekpad for the Garand was made for use on the M1C and D models, which had scopes offset to the left, and the function of the cheekpad was to push your cheek (and head) to the left to line up properly with the scope. The M1A scope is mounted center over the bore - you don't need or want to be off center.
Best bet is to raise the comb with an add-on cheekpiece - padded nylon ones are readily available which strap on without marring your stock.
Or you could buy a cut-off 'butt' from us, saw out the comb, and attach to your comb to raise you the inch or so you need. At $5 plus some handiwork on your part, you can hardly beat the cost-effectiveness.
In a real pinch, cut-off the forearm of a busted stock, invert it, and duct-tape it to your existing stock for a quick fix, and maybe to try it out and see how important the extra height is to your shooting. |
